Topsy Turvey's Are Here!
1. What do I need to get started with my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
You will find in your Topsy Turvy® box the grow bag, with hanging wires attached
and a screw-eye to secure to into wood. In addition to what comes in the Topsy Turvy
box, you will need to make sure you have potting soil, fertilizer, a live seedling
and plenty of water. Follow the instructions that come with the Topsy Turvy® planter
and you will be on your way to the best vegetables ever!
2. How do I hang the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
To get started, pre-drill a hole into solid wood. Using the screw-eye provided with
the Topsy Turvy®, twist into the hole until all threads are securely fastened in
the wood. Do not hang in sheet rock or vinyl siding overhangs.
3. Should I plant my tomatoes before or after I hang the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
For easier access while planting, temporarily lower the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter
to waist height using a rope or cord.
4. Can I plant more than one tomato plant in my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
Yes, you can plant up to 2 plants in one planter.
5. How often should I water my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
You cannot over water the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter! Watering regularly is the
most important thing you can do to get beautiful tomatoes. Early in the season,
when the tomato plant is small and the weather isn’t too hot, you should water every
other day. When the plant gets mature, and the weather gets hot, you should water
every day. To test if you are watering enough, lift the grow bag slightly upward
by hand. If the bag is heavy, it is well watered; if it is very lightweight, you
need to water more. If the leaves are beginning to curl and/or look wilted, you
need to water immediately!
6. Should I fertilize my tomato plant in the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter? What type
of fertilizer works best?
Yes, we recommend that you do fertilize your tomato plant. Add ½ cup of vegetable
time-release fertilizer to the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter as you add the potting
soil. This will feed your plant for the first 2 weeks. After that initial feeding,
we recommend you use water-soluble fertilizer formulated specifically for tomatoes.
Add ½ cup of properly diluted fertilizer every 2 weeks while the tomatoes are very
young. Once the plant gets large ( hanging down 2 to 3 feet ), fertilize every 10
days. When plants are very mature, (6 ft long with 15+ tomatoes) you should fertilize
every few days.
7. How much sun should my tomato plants get?
Tomatoes love sun and require several hours of full sun every day. However, they
do not do well in extended periods of high temperatures. If you live in a hot climate(consistently
over 90 degrees), be sure to locate the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter where it will
get shade at least part of the day.
8. How do I get lots of tomatoes from the plant in my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
Let your plants grow wild, never trimming the plant. The tomatoes will be smaller
but more plentiful.
9. How many tomatoes is a single tomato plant able to produce?
A tomato plant can grow up to 30 or more pounds of tomatoes at a time with the right
amount of nutrients and maintenance.
10. How do I get large tomatoes from the plant in my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
Keep you plants “suckered” – Pinching off all new shoots as they appear between
main stem breaks. Additionally, keep limbs, stems and leaves trimmed. This allows
more of the nutrients to go to the tomatoes and less to the stems and leaves.
11. When should I start my tomato plants?
As early in the spring as possible, after the last frost in your area.
12. Can I reuse my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter?
Absolutely! When not using the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter, empty it, clean, and
store in a dry place until you are ready to grow more tomatoes!
13. Can I use my Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter for growing vegetables other than tomatoes?
A variety of things can be grown in the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter, including fresh
herbs, zucchini, eggplant, or a variety of peppers. Be sure to purchase healthy
plants.
14. Why is using the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter better than planting tomatoes in
the ground?
Using the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter saves both space and time, eliminating the
need to weed, cage or stake the plants. It also minimizes pests and disease by isolating
the plant in the planter above the ground.
15. How does the Topsy Turvy® Tomato Planter work?
It uses gravity as a vertical growing advantage. Gravity pulls the water and nutrients
directly to the roots never being lost to run-off or to feed the weeds as in ground-grown
tomatoes. The vertical grow bag heats up in the sun, warming the plant like a greenhouse
so the root system explodes.
16. How do I keep flying insects and other pests away from my Topsy Turvy®?
If you want to grow 100% organic tomatoes, you will need to use organic products
like hot pepper sprays that use no chemicals to kill or ward off insects. Other
tomato pests such as tomato hornworms and whiteflies, etc., can be kept at bay by
using garden insecticide sprays available at all garden shops. Be sure and carefully
wash your tomato harvests if you use chemical sprays. Often your hung-up-in-the-air
grow-bag will not be affected by insects or pests. Eliminated completely are ground
oriented pests such as cutworms, in ground nematodes and small animals.
